ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the inhibiting effect of acupuncture at points Neiguan(PC6) and Shuigou(GV26) on caspase-3, and PARP-1 mRNA and protein expressions in the cerebral cortex in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. Method Forty male SD rats were randomized to normal, sham operation, model and acupuncture groups. A model of middle cerebral artery infarction was made by modified Longa thread occlusion. Neurological function was scored using a 6-grade 5-point Bederson's scale. Caspase-3, and PARP-1 mRNA and protein expressions in rat cerebral cortex were determined using real-time PCR and Western Blot at 24 hrs after cerebral ischemia. Result Neurological deficit was reduced in the acupuncture group of rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion compared with the model group (P<0.01). Acupuncture could down-regulate caspase-3, and PARP-1 mRNA and protein expressions and there was a statistically significant difference compared with the model group (P<0.05, P<0.01; P<0.05, P<0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture at points Neiguan and Shuigou can down-regulate caspase-3, and PARP-1 mRNA and protein expressions in the cerebral cortex in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the protective effect of curcumin (Cur) on mice cornea against ultraviolet A (UVA)-induced damage. Methods Together 30 C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into 3 groups (10 mice in each group):UVA irradiation group (UVA group),UVA irradiation with curcumin treatment group (UVA + Cur group) and control group.Mice in the UVA group was exposed to UVA for 24 h,with the wavelength of 320-400 nm and the irradiation intensity of 0.05 W · cm-2.In UVA + Cur group, mice were given 30 mg · kg-1 curcumin intraperitoneally 3 days before irradiation and lasted until 48 h after irradiation. And the control group was left untreated. Then corneal opacity was evaluated and scored through slit-lamp biomicroscopy. After irradiation for 48 h,corneal tissue was collected for the detection of the expression of NF-κB by electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Results After irradiation for 48 h,the score of corneal opacity in the UVA group (3.10 ± 0.74) was higher than that of the control group (0) and UVA + Cur group (0.35 ± 0.24) (P < 0.05).The expression of NF-κB in cornea was detectable at a low level in the control group (1.25 ± 0.13),but was remarkably increased in UVA group (3.98 ± 0.58) and suppressed by curcumin in UVA +Cur group (1.58 ± 0.34) (P < 0.05).There was no significant difference in corneal opacity score and NF-κB expression between control and UVA + Cur group (P > 0.05),but there was significant difference between control and UVA group and UVA + Cur and UVA group (all P < 0.05).Conclusion Curcumin can protect cornea against UVA-induced damage via inhibiting NF-κB activation.

ABSTRACT

?AIM: To evaluate the effects on recovering of corneal wound and postoperative discomfort of different methods for primary pterygium.?METHODS: Forty-seven cases ( 60 eyes ) of primary pterygium were excised under microscope with limbal epithelial transplantation, with sharp dissection ( 24 cases, 30 eyes, Group A) and blunt dissection (23 cases, 30 eyes, Group B).All cases were followed up for 1d to 1mo.?RESULTS: The recovering of corneal wound was better in Group B on 1st day and 3rd day after surgery.Pain, photophobia and tears, foreign body sensation were more serious in group A on 1st day after surgery with a statistically significant difference (P=0.005,0.015,0.012). Pain, photophobia and tears, foreign body sensation were more serious in Group A on 3rd day after surgery with a statistically significant difference ( P=0.019,0.018, 0.015).There was no statistically significant difference on 1wk and 1mo after surgery (P>0.05).? CONCLUSION: Compared with sharp dissection, primary pterygium excised with blunt dissection can significantly improve recovering of corneal wound and postoperative discomfort.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the influence of phacoemulsification on corneal endothelium of senile cataract with lupus nephritis (LN). ●METHODS:This clinical trial involved 40 cataract patients with lupus nephritis (40 eyes), and 50 cases (50 eyes) without lupus nephritis. All of them underwent phacoemulsification+lOL implantation. The parameters of corneal endothelial cell including central corneal endothelium cell density ( CED ), average area of endothelial cell ( AVE) and coefficient of variation ( CV) were recorded by corneal endothelial microscope pre -operation and at one month after operation. The data were analyzed by SPSS 13. 0 statistical software. ● RESULTS: Both LN group and control group, the morphology of coneal endothelial was statistical significant differences between pre - operation and 1mo postoperation. The CED was lower, AVE and CV were higher ( P ● CONCLUSlON: The corneal endothelial cell in lupus nephritis patients is more fragile. Safe and reliable operation should be selected for these patients.
